Midwife and Lactation Consultant Megan from ‘Learn, Latch, Love’

This week we sat down with Midwife and Lactation consultant Megan from Learn, Latch, Love. If you’ve been lucky enough to cross paths with Megan you would know that she is both gentle, caring and nurturing whilst simultaneously being a great laugh and a ball of fun- just the perfect combo! I have seen the incredible difference she has made to so many of my patients especially in those early weeks postpartum. She really is a gem!

This one feels extra special to me as I have been lucky enough to have Megan support me through my own journey to motherhood. I am 36 weeks pregnant as I post this interview… so some of it could be the pregnancy hormones… but Megans answer to ‘What is your favourite part about your job?’ has made me tear up! So grab a cuppa and have a little read to find out more about this wonderful lady!

So tell us, what led you to becoming a midwife? And then further from this a lactation consultant?

I have always loved babies! When I was at school I wanted to find a way I could work with babies and considered a few professions including physio – (even got a uni offer) - but decided on nursing instead. I spent the first year of my career working at Westmead kids hospital and then jumped into my Midwifery training. Being with women as they birth their baby is just magical! Sure, there's lots of hard stuff, but the moment a family is created is pretty indescribable. As far as becoming a lactation consultant goes – like many people who choose specialty skills it's because of personal experience and seeing a deficit in the system that supports so many people. Over and over again I saw women being given outdated or bad advice and walking away from hospitals feeling like they were failing motherhood – and it just doesn’t need to be like that. As a new mum myself I experienced so much pain feeding my first baby that I just knew as a midwife – I had to do better and know better, so I went to the extreme end of becoming a lactation consultant.

Tell us about your business 'Learn, Latch, Love' and can you run us through the services that you offer?

Learn Latch Love is all about supporting women through pregnancy, birth and the early weeks with their baby. As a midwife and IBCLC, I offer in-home and online consultations tailored to each family’s needs – from antenatal education and birth planning, to birth debriefs, breastfeeding and bottle-feeding support, postpartum check-ins, and birth debriefs. It’s holistic, evidence-based care designed to help parents feel confident and supported every step of the way.

Leading on from this are you able to give us a little more info on the feeding support that you offer?

Of course! When we think about nurturing our babies, feeding them is often top of the list. Whether you are choosing to breast or formula feed, mix feed or exclusively express, you deserve to feel supported by an educated professional. There is so much info out there, it is hard to know what to believe – or what is best. To help support families, I offer 1:1 prenatal consults, to either work through their previous experience and plan for the new baby, or offer education to help them feel prepared for when bub arrives (I have a group class on the cards too – just perfecting the details before I launch). Once baby arrives, I offer in-home, in-clinic and online consultations at any stage postpartum to help navigate the challenges of breastfeeding,  weaning, introducing bottles, navigating weight gain issues etc.

Obviously every week would be a little different, but what does a normal week in the life of Megan look like? (work, family etc.)

Mostly organized chaos. I have 2 boys who are very active and a husband who loves running ultramarathons, so we must run a tight schedule. Monday and Friday I work as the practice Midwife at Sydney Babies where I see women for antenatal checkups (all the normal pregnancy checks + some birth prep/education) and then get to meet their baby afterwards and provide some postnatal TLC. Tues/Wed/Thu I balance my private practice doing antenatal and postnatal consults, mostly in people’s homes all around the Northern Beaches and North Shore. I try to squeeze a reformer Pilates class or 2 in there, and the occasional shift at Northern Beaches Hospital in the birthing unit – because I miss birth so much and just love all the Midwives and Doctors there. Then throw in kids swimming, soccer, cricket, some volunteering at school and spending time with family, and a bit of educational content creation – its no wonder the week goes by so fast!

And you are part of the Sydney Babies team and work alongside Dr Hugh Porter. Tell us a little about what this looks like and what it’s like working alongside Hugh?

I absolutely LOVE being part of the Sydney Babies team. It’s truly collaborative, and Hugh’s vision is that women benefit from both his medical care and the holistic support of a midwife. When I’m in clinic, I have lots of autonomy and get to work to my full scope—spending time with couples talking through birth education, birth plans, emotional changes, self-care, and all the routine pregnancy checks. Later in pregnancy, we dive into what to expect postnatally—for both mum and baby—because let’s be honest, that part can feel like a blindfolded rollercoaster! One of the best parts is the continuity of care. I get to meet our clients again as parents when they return with their newborn—debriefing their birth, holding space as they navigate those early, raw weeks, and gently guiding them as they find their feet as a new family.

Hugh has been amazing to work with. He’s kind, thoughtful, and genuinely respectful of the midwifery model of care. From day one, he’s been supportive and approachable—I never hesitate to call him with any questions or concerns, because he is always so happy to take the call. Being supported like that makes my job so much easier. And beyond our work at Sydney Babies, he champions my private practice too, which means the world. It’s pretty special to have someone like that in your corner.

What is your favourite part of your job?

It used to be the births—the Disney moment right after delivery when the whole energy in the room shifts. Watching new parents meet their slimy, pink, wriggly baby for the first time and seeing that instant transformation as they become a family—that never gets old. But now? Without a doubt, it’s the women. Being alongside them during birth, witnessing their strength and power unfold—it’s breathtaking every single time, but more so, seeing a woman realize her true inner strength and power, often for the very first time, that's incredible.

Outside the birth space, it's the quiet moments that stay with me. Sitting in someone’s home, when they let the walls down—tears streaming, big feelings pouring out—and I get to be their safe space, even just for a moment. That’s the part I truly treasure. Sometimes I feel like I’m helping to rebuild them after a tough postnatal experience, helping them find their feet and trust themselves again. It’s an honour, and one I don’t take lightly.

Non work related! Where is your go to spot for coffee on the Northern beaches? And favourite place for an afternoon drink (and drink of choice?)

Hmmm favorite coffee spot? To be fair, I don’t really ever have time to go out for a coffee, and I’m actually a tea girl – but you can absolutely find me with my keep-cup picking up a little sweet treat on a Saturday morning from Little Cocina Bake Shop in Collaroy Plateau, as I head off to whatever sport is in season.

An afternoon bevvie – for the convenience – The Collaroy - for a lemon drop martini – or a crisp NZ sav blanc depending on my mood. The food is great, the views are incredible and its so easy to get to.
